Preacher: Rev. Jeremy Schultz

Biography: Pastor Jeremy Schultz was born and raised in Illinois. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Concordia University, Chicago in 1994. He earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Concordia Seminary – St. Louis in 1998. His vicarage assignment was to Christ the King Lutheran Church in Largo, Florida. His first call was to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Des Peres, MO, where he served first as an Assistant, then as Associate Pastor from 1998-2005. Since January 2006, Pastor Schultz has served as Pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Royal Oak, MI.

He and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Lydia and Elijah. Although he loves all aspects of being a pastor, his greatest joy comes in seeing people come to faith and mature as followers of Christ. His hobbies include watching all sports, especially Cardinal baseball, golfing (though he's not very good), reading, dating his wife and playing with his children.

1) The Teacher as Marketer by Terry Schmidt - Teachers play a very important role in marketing your Lutheran School. Terry will explain what that role is and the best practices that help teachers be effective in this role.

2) Music Directors Round Table by Greg Paul - Music Directors are invited to raise questions and gather answers from the experiences of others.

3) Web 2.0 by Tim Hardy - Technology can be fun, engaging, and, in the hands of the right person, enhance student thinking, create opportunities to collaborate, and help make learning relevant. Come find out about the exciting tools that are available on the web with the Web 2.0 Toolbox. The is aimed at upper grade elementary instructors.

4) Traveling Books: Using student-made Class Books to Ignite Writing Instruction (Grades 1-3) by Annmarie Johnson - Motivate young writers, teach the writing process, and integrate writing with other subject areas. This session will take participants through a step-by-step process for creating a variety of class books with their students. These fun, easy to implement, and effective lessons are a surefire hit with teachers and students alike.

5) "Voices from the past ... Whispers into the Future" by Michelle Salcedo - It is the role of the early childhood professional to meld the wisdom of yesterday with the research of today to design practices that benefit the citizens of tomorrow. This session takes a look at how that wisdom and research merge to guide us in providing the best possible learning environments for young children.
Come be inspired as you hear what the voices of the past had to say about the experiences we provide young children. Hear how today’s research provides support for those voices. Experience how wisdom and research together can give you the knowledge you need to support and defend the curricular decisions you make in your classrooms. This session will provide each teacher with a sense of pride in the past we share as well as in the future we can work to create.

6) "Gifted and Quirky Children" by Kim Waters - Do you know a bright inquisitive child that is just a little quirky? Do any of these children sound familiar?
- The very intense highly emotional child.
- The bright child who covers her ears at any loud noise.
- The gifted writer whose penmanship cannot be read.
- The bright child that is distracted by sock seams and clothing tags.
- The bright child that will not try new foods.
- The highly empathetic child.
Psychologist Kim Waters, MS, LLP will discuss Sensory Processing Dysfunction and other common emotional and behavioral issues seen in gifted children. She will also provide strategies to help meet the social emotional needs of all gifted children.

7) "Autism" by Karen Anspach - What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder have an impairment in their ability to understand and use non-verbal/verbal communication, understand social behavior, and think/behave flexibly. Together we will explore this ever increasing spectrum disorder. Discussion will include current facts, what areas of development are affected in students with ASD, and what common features students may demonstrate. Strategies for the classroom will also be presented to assist the educator in integrating academic, behavior, social, and communication into the ASD student’s educational plan.

1) "Effective Test Development and Writing" by Dr. Judith Backes - LHSA teachers will be building from their August In-Service with Dr. Backes following up on the topic of "Effective Test Development and Writing".

2) Art for Elementary Teachers by Gary Faszholz - Gary will be assisting elementary school teachers in understanding art concepts and how best to impact students.

3) Mentor Texts: Using Children's Literature and Modeling to Improve Student Writing (Grades 3 and up) by Ann Marie Johnson - Help your students unlock the secrets used by professional writers. This session has been designed to help participants teach students in grades 3 and up how to strengthen their writing by using teacher modeling and quality children’s literature. We will examine writer’s craft and specific steps to “reading like a writer”.

4) What Teachers and Coaches Need to Know about Common Playground and Sports Injuries by Dr. Joseph Guettler, Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon - This short course will serve as a primer for teachers and coaches who are often the "first responders" when a youngster or growing athlete gets hurt. Dr. Guettler will outline the common injuries that tend to occur on the playground, field, and court. Most importantly, participants in this course will be equipped with a better understanding so that they can execute injury prevention strategies, as well as treatment plans for those youngsters and growing athletes who do get injured.

5) Leadership Essentials by Betsy Spiker - In this everchanging world of ours, how does one become an effective leader? Can you meet everyone's needs and still have your sanity? The answer is YES! Come and learn some strategies that could help you in your work and maybe even your personal life.

6) "Words their Way" by Karen Anspach and Chelsea Meyers, LSEM teacher/consultants - Help your students boost spelling skills, word attack skills, vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension using word study! Words Their Way is a practical, hands-on program helping students study words at their individual instructional levels. It can be used in classrooms with students of all ages (K-12) and students who are English Language Learners or have special learning needs. During this session we will address how to evaluate your students word study skills, how to implement this program into your classroom and also give you hands-on word study activities that will motivate and engage your students and help them become successful literacy learners.

7) The Development of Executive Functions in Preschool and School-Age Children - by Dr. Isabelle Beaulieu, Center for Neuropsychology, Learning and Development of Oakland County - This presentation will focus on demystifying executive functioning skills in young children, with an emphasis on developmental issues. Participants will have a better understanding of the links between brain development and the environmental demands that may be placed on children. This will also assist teachers in identifying children who may be at higher risk for academic difficulties due to delayed executive functioning skills, and explore ways to foster these skills within the classroom setting.
