Proclaiming the Caring Creator… The psalmist says, “I will proclaim Your great deeds” (Psalm 145:6).  Do you feel confident and equipped to share your faith in your everyday conversations with friends, families, and neighbors?  With this question in mind, The Lutheran Adult Gathering has been crafted to provide practical help for proclaiming the Caring Creator and His great deeds with people today.

Dr. Paul Maier - Keynote Speaker & Sectional Leader

Dr. Paul L. Maier is The Russell H. Seibert Professor of Ancient History at Western Michigan University, the Third Vice-President of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, and a much-published author of both scholarly and popular works.  His novels include two historical documentaries:  Pontius Pilate and The Flames of Rome, as well as a theological thriller that became # 1 national bestseller in religious fiction: A Skeleton in God's Closet.  A sequel, More Than a Skeleton, appeared in 2003.

His non-fiction works include In the Fullness of Time, a book that correlates sacred with secular evidence from the ancient world impinging on Jesus and early Christianity; Josephus -- The Essential Works, a new translation/commentary on writings of the first-century Jewish historian; and Eusebius -- The Church History, a similar book on the first Christian historian.  More than five million Maier books are now in print in twenty languages, as well as over 250 scholarly articles and reviews in professional journals.

Dr. Maier lectures widely, appears frequently in national radio, television, and newspaper interviews, and has received numerous awards.  He has also penned seven children's books, and hosted six video series dealing with Jesus, St. Paul, the early church, and current Christianity.

Dr. Adam Francisco

Dr. Adam Francisco is a leading authority on Islam from a Christian perspective. Many of his unique insights come from personal experiences sharing his faith with Muslims. Francisco graduated from Concordia University, Irvine, Calif. with a M.A. in theology in 2001. Afterwards, he moved to England where, in addition to pursuing further research in historical Christian theology, he studied Arabic and Islamic theology at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. Francisco currently serves as Associate Professor of History at Concordia, Irvine, and has a busy schedule as a guest speaker. He and his wife, Rachel, have four children and reside in South Orange County about 3.7 miles from his favorite surfing and fishing spot.

Phyllis Wallace created “Woman to Woman” talk radio produced by Lutheran Hour Ministries. 1400 shows equipped women for “busy, boundaries, peak performance and belief with relief” from a Biblical perspective. She now broadcasts God’s Love as a freelance writer and speaker. Phyllis’ insights energize and inspire with the hope found In Christ. Born at an early age, Phyllis delights in blowing out candles on the cake because aging is the opportunity of a lifetime. What a way to have your cake and eat it too!!

Pat Maier

Pat Maier - Sectional Leader

Pat Maier enjoys writing, drawing, and “imagining” to inspire others in their walk with Jesus. A pastor's wife and former Lutheran educator, she believes that the creative use of language and art—when applied to God’s Word—can touch the heart, promote understanding, and bring about joy and connection. She is currently involved in planning and presenting at retreats and women’s events in the Michigan District, as well as teaching about Visual Faith in the Great Lakes area. Pat recently completed a series of margin art which is included in The Enduring Word Bible from CPH. She finds great joy in nature, gardening, and time spent with family. She lives with her husband, David, near Ann Arbor, Mich., where he serves as President of the Michigan District, LCMS. They have four children, three amazing children-in-love, and two grandchildren (so far!).

David Gehm - Sectional Leader

David M. Gehm has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Wellspring Lutheran Services (previously Lutheran Homes of Michigan) since January, 1994. In this role, he is responsible for the administrative, executive, and governance leadership for the organization that employs over 1,500 people across Michigan.

Mr. Gehm graduated from Wayne State University School of Pharmacy, Detroit, Michigan in 1984. He recently completed a two-year term as Chairman of the Board of Directors of LeadingAge, Washington, D.C., and currently serves on the board of directors of The Michigan Federation for Children and Families in Lansing.

Mr. Gehm is Married to Elaine and they have four children and two grandchildren.

Rev. Dr. David P. E. Maier attended Concordia University Ann Arbor and Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. After his ordination he served Our Savior in Marlette, Mich. and St. Peter in Arlington Heights, Ill. In 1989, he was called to Our Savior, Lansing where he served until he was elected President of the Michigan District, LCMS in 2009. President Maier has been a frequent speaker at youth retreats, men's gatherings, and served many times as Dean at Camp Arcadia. Before his election to District President, he also served the Michigan District as a Circuit Visitor and as a Vice-President.

Rev. Bill Wangelin serves as the senior pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church and School in Lansing, Mich. He enjoys teaching and preaching on Missional Living, Discipleship, Church History, and the Epistles of St. Paul. He and his wife Kristin have four children: Joshua, Lydia, Benjamin, and Hannah. Their family mission is to share with others the joy of living with Jesus. 

John Horak

Minister of Music
Our Savior Lutheran Church

John Horak is the Minister of Music at Our Savior, Lansing. Born and raised in southern California, he graduated in 1983 from Concordia College in Seward, Neb. with a BS in Elementary Education and a BA in Sacred Music. In 1985, he received a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. John is the lead worship planner for Our Savior's traditional and contemporary worship services. He directs the Adult Choir, Adult Handbell Choir, and Brass Ensemble. He also serves as the head organist and pianist with the worship band. In the school, he directs the handbell choir and several school choirs. John has been married to his wife Sue for 30 years. They have one son, David, who lives in West Virginia.
