West Pastors' Conference 2018

Tuesday, May 15, 2018 - 09:00 am EDT to Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - 11:30 am EDT

Holiday Inn Kalamazoo West
2747 South 11th Street
Kalamazoo MI  49009

Event Description:

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father” (John 14:12). The ministry of Christ to His church carries on through the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments. As we serve our congregations with these sacred means our Lord has instituted, the Rev. Dr. Peter Scaer (Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne) will lead us through a Sacramental Reading of the Gospels, focusing upon the baptismal miracles in the life of Jesus, the Bread of Presence, and the Cup of Salvation.

Goals and Objectives – West Pastors

  • To provide an opportunity for worship, prayer, fellowship, and the study of God’s Word, so that pastors will be strengthened in the faith and refreshed in their vocation and ongoing ministry.
  • To provide the pastor with continuing education and study tools so that he is better equipped to faithfully teach his people in the ongoing instruction in the faith.
  • To give the pastor the awareness and knowledge of the sacramental fabric of the Gospel narratives.
  • To introduce and encourage ways and means for the district, congregations and their pastors to preach, teach, and practice the “greater works” of the ongoing ministry of Christ to His Church.

Compassion Ministry

In support of Michigan District's “Great Compassion Ministry,” the West Pastors’ Conference will support the Red Cross in assembling Comfort Kits at Immanuel, Kalamazoo immediately following the worship service.  Please consider bringing several items listed to assist in this endeavor.

Comfort Kits are provided to families who have been forced from their home because of a disaster. Here in Southwest Michigan the major disaster that occurs are single family housefires. After a fire, families are literally left with nothing and very much appreciate the necessary items that are in the comfort kits. Most recently, many local families were forced from their homes because of severe flooding that occurred in February and March.

Comfort kit items include:

  • Shaving gel/cream
  • Hand & Body Lotion
  • Gender Neutral Deodorant
  • Hand Soap
  • Mild Shampoo/ Conditioner
  • Tissues
  • Comb
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothbrush Cover
  • Disposable Razor
  • Wash cloth

Rev. Dr. Peter Scaer

Associate Professor of Exegetical Theology
Director of M.A. Program
Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne

Dr. Peter Scaer did his undergraduate work in the Classics at Indiana University Bloomington. From there he went on to Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne (M.Div., 1992), and to Notre Dame, where he earned his M.A. (1995) and completed his doctoral dissertation on the Lukan Passion Narrative (Ph.D., 2001). From 1996 to 2000, Dr. Scaer served as the pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Ind. He joined the Exegetical Department of CTSFW in 2000.

His passions include the Gospel of Mark and the sacramental ministry of Jesus. He loves to show how the life and teachings of Christ anticipate and form the life of the Church. He is also deeply involved in life issues. As a pastor, he served on the board of Birthright, a local crisis pregnancy center. Currently he serves as President of Allen County Right to Life.  He is also a Founding Member of Shepherds United, an ecumenical Christian group formed to defend Life, Natural Marriage, and Religious Liberty. In both the church and the public square, he speaks out on the issues that affect both our church and society, always placing the focus on Christ, who gives us life and defines for us what it means to be truly human.

Dr. Scaer and his wife Amy are blessed with three children, and he spends much of his free time driving his youngest son to and from band practice, while listening to books on tape.
