Julian Petzold, Ph.D., president of Lion Safety Consulting, was appointed to serve on the State of Michigan’s School Safety and Mental Health Commission. Here is the official press release:
Julian Petzold, of Harrison Charter Township, is the president and owner of Lion Safety Consulting. Petzold was previously the principal of Trinity Lutheran School [Clinton Twp.] and executive director at Valley Lutheran High School [Saginaw]. Petzold holds a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education and psychology from Concordia University, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Oakland University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in educational leadership from Concordia University. Julian Petzold is appointed as a member who has experience with special education, submitted by the Speaker of the House of Representatives for a term commencing April 30, 2026, and expiring April 9, 2027.

Petzold says, “I was nominated by Speaker of the House of Representatives Matt Hall. I visited his office during MANS Public Policy Day a few years ago. I didn't speak with him, but I did talk to his staff member for quite some time. I was able to share about my doctoral research study, published articles related to my research study, and the practical nature of my training for safety in schools, early childhood centers, and churches. I believe God brought this opportunity to me, because I didn't seek out the opportunity to serve in this way. However, I feel a strong desire to serve where God is calling me to be, and there might be more that God is doing through this appointment than I can see. It's an honor to serve the state of Michigan through the School Safety and Mental Health Commission in the year ahead.”
Michigan District Superintendent of Schools Travis Grulke says, “We are pleased to hear that Julian Petzold has been appointed by Governor Whitmer to the Michigan School Safety and Mental Health Commission. Julian is an outstanding representative for Lutheran and nonpublic schools across the state. As a recognized expert in school safety, he has worked extensively with our Michigan District, LCMS congregations and schools, and his leadership will provide a vital perspective to this state commission.”
