Registration Now Open for the Black Ministry Family Convocation

Under the theme “Empowering and Advancing the Next Generation,” the Black Ministry Family Convocation will take place July 7–10, 2027 at the Embassy Suites, Concord Mills in Concord, North Carolina. The convocation marks the 150th anniversary of Black Ministry in the LCMS and will set the tone and pace for Black Ministry in the Lutheran Church for the coming years.

Participants from kindergarten through young adulthood will take part in Christ-centered worship, Bible study, leadership development, service projects, fellowship, and age-appropriate activities. They will also learn about the rich history and legacy of Black Ministry in the LCMS while discovering how God can use their gifts to serve His Church and their communities.

This ministry experience is being led by Rev. Amos Gray, Rev. Dr. Rodney Emilien, and a dedicated Youth Ministry Team. Together, they are working to empower and advance the next generation of worshipers, church workers, pastors, teachers, musicians, leaders, and faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Shikina Bodley, who is leading the worship ministry team, adds: “The roots of Black Lutheran ministry in the Carolinas, particularly North Carolina, emerged from African Americans seeking spiritual and educational autonomy post emancipation. Congregations became centers for worship, cultural preservation, and community uplift, blending Lutheran theology with rich cultural traditions.”

In honoring this legacy, the committee is launching a National Black and African Lutheran Worship Arts and Ministry Gifts Survey to identify and cultivate talents within our congregations. This initiative aims to create a resource pool for musicians, artists, and leaders, supporting future ministry efforts. Shikina adds: “Your participation is crucial for preserving our legacy and shaping a vibrant future. We invite you and your congregation to share your gifts for God’s glory. Use this link to complete the survey.”
