Rejoice, Pray, Give Thanks

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

Paul’s words seem impossible at first glance. Rejoice always? Pray without ceasing? Give thanks in all circumstances? When we look honestly at our lives, we confess that we often do the opposite. We grumble instead of giving thanks. We worry instead of praying. We despair instead of rejoicing.

These commands expose our weakness and our sin. Left to ourselves, we cannot produce the constant joy, prayer, patience, and love that God desires. Like all of God’s commands, these verses show us our need for a Savior.

But thanks be to God, Paul does not point us to ourselves. He points us to Christ Jesus. The reason Christians can rejoice is not because life is easy. The reason we can pray is not because we are strong. The reason we can give thanks is not because every circumstance is pleasant. We rejoice, pray, and give thanks because Jesus died for our sins and rose again for our salvation.

In Christ, God has declared us forgiven. Through His Word and Sacraments, He continues to strengthen our faith. The Holy Spirit works through these means of grace to create in us what God commands from us. As Luther taught, God does not merely tell us what to do; He gives what He commands through the Gospel.

That is why Paul can call Christians to lives of patience, kindness, discernment, and holiness. These are not conditions for earning God’s favor. They are the fruits of a faith already resting in Christ’s finished work.

As God’s redeemed people, we honor those who serve us in His Church. We encourage the discouraged. We help the weak. We seek good instead of revenge. We test all things by God’s Word and cling to what is good. Not because we must earn salvation, but because salvation has already been won for us by Jesus.

Today, whatever circumstances you face, remember that your joy rests not in your situation but in your Savior. Christ is risen. Your sins are forgiven. God is for you. Therefore rejoice, pray, and give thanks.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for Your saving death and glorious resurrection. Forgive us for our lack of joy, prayer, and gratitude. Through Your Holy Spirit, strengthen us through Your Word, that we may encourage the weak, help the hurting, seek what is good, and live as Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in the true faith until the day You bring us into Your eternal kingdom; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
